I'll do a deep-dive once I'm settled in to my new place, but opening the Saturn version up in PowerISO I can confirm that voice over files are already separate from the BGM audio tracks. If they are baked in, we'll have to decide whether it's better to put black bars underneath the new, larger subtitles (pro: would cover up the original subtitles con: would also cover up more of the video than would be desired) or to use the Saturn FMV as a base (pro: no subtitles to cover up con: re-encoding this video would mean compressing an already compressed video. Personally, I think it would look too sloppy to have new, larger subtitles overlaid on top of the XBLA version's smaller subtitles. Hopefully I can get a source without subtitles baked in, as the subs used in the XBLA version are far too small to be legible in Cinepak video. Once I'm settled in I'll download the XBLA version and see if I can find the FMV without subtitles baked in. I've tried searching in Japanese as well. Thankfully the music without voice over is available separately on the OST, so this is no major hurdle.Īs for FMVs, of course those consist of a single audio track, which will require me to create a new audio track for each using a combination of the corresponding tracks from the OST, stock sound effects, and new voice-over dubs.Ĭan't seem to find any footage of the XBLA FMV without subtitles. CDA has both voice-over and music baked in together. The major exception to this for in-game audio is the one-minute "survival" portion of the final boss section. ![]() To be honest, I had completely taken it for granted that something along these lines would be the case for in-game audio (I think that might be what made my earlier post so unclear), but I can now confirm it. In the narrative, Solomon describes Eliza’s fall from domestic to field slave - because her new mistress, Mrs. Solomon befriends and tries to comfort Eliza, but there is no comfort for her. Nonetheless, Northup’s autobiography offers the historian of slavery and Southern women a rich palette of Southern slave and female life - some of it captured remarkably well in McQueen’s film version.įrom the first day that Solomon is enslaved in a Washington, D.C. His views of the women he encountered in the South perhaps were shaped more by the thirty-three years he had lived free in the North, than the twelve he labored as a slave in Louisiana. He brought these lenses of free manhood, Christianity, middle class status and intelligence to the terrifying scenario of slavery he endured. On morning in March 1841, in Saratoga Springs, New York, when Merrill Brown and Abram Hamilton approached Solomon Northup as part of an elaborate scheme to kidnap and sell him as a slave, their target was about thirty-three, a literate, urban, Christian husband and father of three, a skilled craftsman, inventor, and musician. Kidnapped in Washington City in 1841, and Rescued in 1853 (which Northup dedicated to Harriet Beecher Stowe, whose own character “Eliza” was the most famous iconic slave woman of the era) certainly made it possible for a Northern audience to accept the details of rampant sexual abuse and forced concubinage detailed, for example, in Louisa Picquet’s Octoroon: A Tale of Southern Slave Life and Harriet Jacobs’ Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, both published in 1861. Twelve Years a Slave: Narrative of Solomon Northup, a Citizen of New-York, True stories of the inability of enslaved women to maintain the gendered conventions of the day - domesticity, sexual purity, and maternal sacrifice - because of their status as physical and sexual laborers who could not be legally married or have parental control over their children, abound in published accounts from the late antebellum era. Published descriptions of the plight of enslaved women, of course, made for an important abolitionist device intended to gain sympathy for their cause. Indeed, one of the aspects of Northup’s autobiography that convinced director McQueen to adapt it to film was the Northrup's depiction of slave women in his lengthy account. It is, without a doubt, one of the best depictions of antebellum slave life put to film and, along with, Haile Gerima’s 1993 masterwork Sankofa, Stan Lathan’s 1987 Uncle Tom’s Cabin, the indomitable classic Roots of 1977, and Gabriel Ranger’s 2010 I Am Slave, the story of the contemporary enslavement of Mende Nazer, 12 Years a Slave presents some of the most compelling, and soon to be iconic, images of slave women on celluloid. What really surprised me was how much money in fines Whole Foods has paid for incorrect pricing. Just read this recent article for more information about Whole Foods pricing. They know everything at Whole Foods is all-natural or organically-grown.īut sometimes Whole Foods is more expensive on some items. But one of the big reasons people shop at Whole Foods is so they DON’T have to read the label. The overall mix of products may be all-natural (they claim 90% on their FAQ page). If you look closely at some of the products at Sprouts (especially the candy in the bulk bins), you’ll see tons of artificial colors. The problem is (at least with me) that it’s just a veneer. So Sprouts went after all the old hippies and disgruntled shoppers who felt disenfranchised by Whole Foods going “corporate” (I know, I was there on the frontlines at Whole Foods then). Sprouts intentionally wanted to make their stores look and feel the way Whole Foods stores did before they went public and started trying to become the large multi-national corporation they are today. However, if you recall, in the above section, I mentioned they looked like a Whole Foods store circa 1992. Just like Whole Foods, they have an in-house butcher, seafood, and a full-service deli. Sprouts has a large variety of natural, organic, and non-GMO items.
